In this tutorial I am sharing kid’s hair care tips and show you how to get those twists to stay "locked" together for better hold and definition!
Model:
Khaleesi – 7 yrs old
- high density
- mixed textures/heat trained
- medium porosity
Step 1: Apply Scalp Clarifier and massage in for 1-2 min, rinse with lukewarm water.
Kids need scalp care too! The Scalp Clarifier is going to remove build-up and outdoor pollutants. This foaming, pre-shampoo treatment is packed with essential vitamins and botanicals to improve scalp health. It has Salicylic Acid to gently exfoliate, unclog follicles and remove dead skin cells which will reduce flaking. This formula also has sea kelp to strengthen hair and increase scalp circulation and Indian Winter Cherry to reduce hair loss and damage.
Step 2: Apply The Ultimate Hydrator shampoo and massage roots to ends, then rinse out.
This is a sulfate-free, pillow-soft, creamy shampoo is made with botanicals like marshmallow root to improve elasticity, essential oils like carrot seed oil to stimulate growth and repairing proteins like hydrolyzed wheat protein to strengthen and repair. This is the step in the washday process that facilitates moisture absorption the most. This cleanser helps begin the detangling process by loosening the clumps of hair, while removes build up and repairs damage to reduce breakage.
Step 3: Apply Elasticity Restoring Treatment, detangle in sections, then let it process for 8-10 min.
Tool: FHI Heat UNbrush is specifically designed to glide without breaking the hair and it lets you get through larger sections without the tears. This brush saves time and makes detangling a pain-free breeze. Use code MOKNOWSHAIR for additional 10% off.
Kid’s need protein-moisture balance too! I get asked a lot if MoKnowsHair products are ok for kids, and the answer is YES. Your little ones need just as much care for their strands as you do. Khaleesi’s mother has been using MoKnowsHair products on her since the first collection dropped in 2019 when she was two and a half years old.
This Elasticity Restoring Treatment is specifically formulated to repair the lipid barrier of strands to retain more moisture and reduce frizz while strengthening. It has hydrolyzed quinoa, the only protein with all nine essential amino acids that act as natural strengtheners to protect the hair shaft, mongongo oil to prevent moisture loss by creating a protective barrier on the cuticle and mango seed butter to restore elasticity. This trifecta of key actives is going to help improve the overall health of the hair and retain length by reducing breakage.
Step 4: Apply Curl Primer throughout and evenly distribute (tool used - Tangle Teezer).
PRO-TIP: Even through it can be difficult sometimes to find stylists that offer services for kids, try to get their ends trimmed at least 2-3 times per year.
Like all kids, Khaleesi plays outside and rolls around in the ground/floor, so protection is very necessary! Starting with Scalp Clarifier to the Elasticity Restoring Treatment, and now the Curl Primer, she is treated at every stage of the washday process. Curl Primer “holy grail” type of leave-in treatment that will detangle, hydrate, nourish and protect hair during styling and in the days after.
Step 5: Section/part hair ear to ear across the crown and down the middle, clip the sections away and install two-stand lock-twists using the Smoothing Pudding.
The Smoothing Pudding is a rich, creamy styler that glides through and absorbs into strands easily giving a flake-free, flexible hold. It has aloe leaf juice as its base to hydrate while it strengthens, meadowfoam seed oil to reduce moisture loss and create a silky-smooth finish and mango seed butter to prevent moisture loss and improve elasticity.
PRO-TIP: All the formulas are concentrated, so little goes a long way, don’t overdo it! If you have excess product after twisting, blot it away with a microfiber towel.
What is a loc-twist? It is a more twisted-twist because you are twisting each of the two sections before twisting them together. That is going to help keep the twist together after it’s dry and give more definition. (watch tutorial for demo).
For the ponytails in the front, I am using Smoothing Pudding and a bristled brush to gather and will secure with a fabric wrapped ponytail holder. This cream is great as a hairdress as well to smooth hair into styles like this. It’s going to hold and also be flexible enough to refresh with a little water or Curl Primer in the days after.
PRO-TIP: Use fabric-wrapped or satin ponytail holders to secure ponytails to avoid breakage and difficulty removing later.
Step 6: Sit under hooded dryer or air-dry.
Khaleesi will sit under the hooded dryer on low heat for 30 minutes to get the roots of her hair dry and at least most of the way on the twists. If you have a hard time getting your little one to sit under a dryer, try and do their hair as early as possible in a day so it has time to dry at the root before you cover it for bed.
PRO-TIP: You should not go to bed with wet hair on your scalp. That will create a warm, damp, dark breeding ground for fungus to grow which manifests as itchy, flaky scalp and can cause inflammation.
Step 7: Pin ponytail twists into buns and apply finishing oil if desired.
Khaleesi will keep the lock-twists in for several days before unraveling to extend the time of the hair style. You can refresh the ponytail base with a little water and Smoothing Pudding if needed and use Curl Primer to rehydrate the twists. She will sleep with a silk/satin scarf tied around the perimeter and bonnet covering all the hair.
I hope this tutorial and tips helps you with styling and caring for your little ones!
