On October 13, I had the pleasure of speaking on a panel for the first CurlChella Kansas City event featuring live demos, swag bags and a beautiful time celebrating all things textured hair! In this tutorial I show you the 90’s inspired bantu knot style I created for this event step-by-step and give you pro styling tips.
Hair color:
Ion Permanent Creme 7IR + 30 vol on roots (1:1.5)/20 vol on mid lengths - ends (1:1.5). Learn about hair color here.
Pro-Tip: Use the Elasticity Restoring Treatment weekly.
This treatment is the reason I am able to have a high styling week and not damage my hair. It is also responsible for the length retention you see. I use this treatment weekly to keep my protein and moisture balanced in the cortex of my strands and keep the cuticle outside layer smooth and filled in so I am not losing moisture through the week. I made this treatment because curly hair is always on its way to being damaged and you have to preventatively treat it. No matter the texture, your hair needs protein and moisturizing ingredients to be strong, hydrated and healthy.
Pro-Tip: If you want to get the most hold out of this one or any gel for that matter, try using it by itself directly on clean, wet hair.
Whenever you are working with products like gels, that have a cast to hold, you dilute the strength of them when you layer other products underneath. Also, if you have highly textured hair, less layering is likely to give you better results without flaking or sticky film after drying. You just have to try different methods to figure out what you like best.
The Defining Gel can be used to define curls or sculpt styles like this. The texture is a smooth jelly that makes it easy to apply and smooth through. It gives a flexible hold that defines curls allowing for volume. The aloe juice in this gel makes it super hydrating, so it can be used by itself. The key is to not overuse it!
Pro-Tip: You don’t have to use the same products all over your head.
You should use what is needed for each section like I have done in this tutorial. For example, if you have more frizz or unruly pieces in the front, use the Defining Gel to coil them, if you have finer texture in the back that doesn’t need as much hold, you can use the Styling Potion so it’s more flexible. I made these styling products to be usable for multiple types of styles and textures - you just have to try different methods and combinations and that could mean different products on different sections of your head.
