Contrary to popular belief, color is not the enemy, the conditions it’s placed under can be. If your hair is dry, breaking or otherwise damaged, color is not a good idea, it will only exasperate those issues. If you wet your hair daily, for whatever reason even through you shouldn’t be, color is not for you. If you don’t like to wash your hair every week, color is not for you. BUT, if you’ve got a solid regimen in place and your hair is in a healthy state, color can be a beautiful way to transform or enhance your look!

If you are considering color, you will need to commit to regular salon visits, and you need to ask your stylist about the frequency so you can book and budget accordingly.

Color treated hair needs to be hydrated to prevent breakage. Moisture is installed in the shampoo and conditioning process, so you need to wash your hair every week. MoKnowsHair Collection is safe for all color-treated hair and is formulated to hydrate, nourish, repair and protect in every phase of your washday and beyond.

You also need to limit the amount of direct heat applied to your hair and stay out of the braids and other long-term styles to avoid structural damage.

If you are a swimmer, you need a swim cap. Color-treated hair does not like chlorine or salt water, it will cause changes to the color’s appearance and damage overall.

Also, you should get a shower filter to prevent contaminants in your tap water from degrading your hair color. Filterbaby makes high-quality filters that remove 99.9% of contaminants leaving you with healthier skin and hair!

If you like to spend a lot of hours in direct sun, you need to cover your hair and also use the Curl Primer for some UV protection. Just like your skin can burn in the sun, so does your hair.

Fantasy colors require more retouching than others to keep them fresh and vibrant – that includes pinks, blues, greens, and even reds. Any color applied from the roots down will need touchups about every 8-10 weeks depending on your growth rate and if you are covering gray, it can be more like six weeks. If you want something that can grow more without frequent retouch, highlights or balayage with no base color is your option. And please, for the love of God, don’t use box color or henna  – for the sake of the health of your hair, see a professional!

The client in this video has a level 5 ash base with level 7 and 8 beige-toned highlights, so I see her every 10 weeks for root touch-up and highlights are refreshed every third or fourth retouch. This would be considered more of a high maintenance custom color. Bleach is not a problem at all here because her hair is healthy and I am not blasting her cuticle - I’m lifting low and slow with bond treatment mixed in the formula.

The Elasticity Restoring Treatment is covering all her bases for at-home care with hydration, curl structure and moisture retention, so we have no worries about her curls staying smooth, bouncy, and beautiful!
