Protective Style Maintenance

Style Tutorial and Tool Review

In this tutorial, I show you how to wash, condition and moisturize your scalp and hair in long-term protective styles such as sew-ins, wigs, and various types of braids and twists. I will also review some products from Hydratherma Naturals and demonstrate the Luxe Therapy Scalp Soother on my friend Mallorie’s full sew-in.*

Featured Products and Tools:

Hydratherma Naturals Moisture Plus Cleanser, Protein Deep Conditioning Treatment and Hair Growth Oil
Hydratherma Naturals Moisture Plus Cleanser, Protein Deep Conditioning Treatment and Hair Growth Oil

Hydratherma Naturals SLS Free Moisture Plus Hair Cleanser has a blend of 11 botanical extracts that gently cleanse the scalp and hair, moisturize and restore elasticity. This shampoo is sulfate-free, safe for color-treated hair and works to restore pH balance to hair. What I loved most was how much moisture and slip the formula has, and the amazing smell.

Hydratherma Naturals Amino Plus, Protein Deep Conditioning Treatment is designed to strengthen and prevent breakage, which is incredibly important in protective styling. The blend of proteins in this conditioner work to provide structure to strands as the vitamins and botanical extracts infuse the hair with moisture. Beyond softening and moisturizing the hair, this conditioner has a sweet, calming smell.

Hydratherma Naturals Hair Growth Oil contains a unique blend of 13 natural oils…that’s right, 13! It has castor, olive, jojoba, vitamin E, avocado, macadamia and kukui oils to name a few. This formula helps treats dry hair, seal in moisture in the hair shaft and ends, and soothe itchy, dry scalp. An oil such as this is great to use during protective styling to hydrate the scalp.

Luxe Therapy Scalp Soother
Luxe Therapy Scalp Soother

The Luxe Therapy Scalp Soother is a tool designed to slide under hair wefts, weaves, netting and braids to soothe itchy scalp, gracefully move shampoo and conditioner through the scalp, and help distribute oils deposited after washing. The curved teeth on this comb allow it to get directly to the scalp without scratching and causing irritation. It is also very flexible, so it won’t break under pressure. If you wear protective styles often, and find it hard to move products around underneath, or get to that little itch in the middle, this comb is for you!

This is also a great tool for those not wearing protective styles. I like to use it to improve circulation in my scalp during conditioning and after. The teeth are much more gentle than my nails, so I know I am not putting to much pressure on my scalp.

You can purchase the Scalp Soother at Luxe Therapy’s website.

Total Time:

Total treatment and style time was about two hours.

Keep and Care:

Mallorie will maintain her wash-n-go waves by sleeping in the pineapple and securing with a satin or silk scarf. She will add more oil to her scalp after a few days, as needed. Mallorie is physically active most days of the week, so she washes her sew-in every seven to ten days.

*Note: I did not install this sew-in.

  1. I have been perming my hair for several years now but I never dye my hair. I would like to stop perming my hair and go natural. What natural products do I need to use for this while I’m transitioning my hair whether I want to wear it curly some days or straight some days?
