The Faux High Puff: A Beauty Cocktail with Sally Beauty

Lately I’ve been sporting what I like to call a faux high puff, and in this tutorial, I show you how I achieve this style with a beauty cocktail of products and tools available at Sally Beauty.

Cleanse and condition.

Cleanse and condition.

CLEANSE & CONDITION: The foundation of any great style is a hydrating shampoo, deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner. I used Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture and Shine Sulfate-Free Shampoo, Hair Smoothie and Leave-in Conditioner as my foundation. This line has plant botanicals, essential oils, and vitamins that hydrate, strengthen and make hair softer and more manageable.

Add styling foam.

Add styling foam.

ADD STYLING FOAM: I am using Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Styling Foam to set my curls. I love foams because they are an excellent option for curly styling. This one has macadamia oil, agave, rosemary, honey, chamomile and a host of other nourishing ingredients that give curls definition with flexible hold.

After applying all over, I will scrunch my hair to clump it and let it set for 20 minutes; this helps reduce frizzing during diffusing.

Diffuse dry.

Diffuse.

DIFFUSE: I am using the Ion Conditioning Ionic Ceramic Tourmaline Dryer with diffuser attachment to dry my hair the rest of the way and give it lots of volume. The ionic generator helps speed up dry time while retaining moisture with far-infared heat. The tourmaline component also helps retain moisture by closing the cuticle, making hair shinier and less frizzy. This is one of my favorite tools because it dries my hair fast and leaves it soft and shiny!

Add hair balm.

Add hair balm.

ADD HAIR BALM: I am going to add the Carol’s Daughter Hair Balm Nourishing Liquid Pomade on the ends of my hair. This balm is infused with coconut and almond oils, shea and cocoa butters, and corn oil, which helps with moisture retention and luster and wheat germ oil, an emollient with lots of fatty acids.

Add gel.

Add gel.

ADD GEL: I am using Carols Daughter Hair Milk Alcohol-Free Styling Gel to smooth my hair. This gel is lightweight with flexible hold, and made with aloe leaf juice, agave and honey to maintain moisture and help smooth and mold hair into place.

Smooth edges.

Smooth edges.

SMOOTH EDGES: I am going to apply some Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Edge Control using my One ‘n Only Argan Heat Professional Ceramic Rattail Comb. This edge gel is made with honey, aloe and macadamia oil for a firm nourishing hold and the comb is durable, yet flexible to gently smooth my edges into place. I really like that this edge control holds without making any sticky or tacky mess, and I can re-work it into place the next day with just a spritz of water.

Create ponytail.

CREATE PONYTAIL: Now I am going to pony my hair using a Denman Natural Bristle Grooming Brush and a DCNL Scrunchi. I love the comfy grip and natural boar bristles on this brush because they help me gently smooth and shape my hair into place. I chose to use a scrunchi because I find it a lot easier to get my hair in one ponytail; no headaches and no pull-out!

Pin to shape.

Pin to shape.

PIN TO SHAPE: My hair is too long to be a round puff, and my texture does not lend itself to standing high on it’s own, so I am using Metagrip Premium Bob Pins along with Salon Care Professional Jumbo Pins to create my high puff. I like using the jumbo pins because they hold more hair so I can use less, then I like to use the standard size pins for any detailed pinning I need to do at the end.

I am taking chunks of curls, loosely pushing them toward the base of my pony and pinning them in, leaving lots of texture present so it has the appearance of a high curly puff, making it a “faux” high puff!
