Soften, Straighten & Trim 4C Hair

Style Tutorial and Product Review

In this tutorial, I show you how I soften, straighten and trim type 4C natural hair. Keep in mind, you can use the products you know work best for you. Just think in terms of the type of product it is and make a parallel choice. For example, you can try something like Creme of Nature’s Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner in place of the Agadir set. Or, try Chi’s Silk Infusion instead of the Deep Brilliance (as it can be easier to find).

UK-based, Mahogany Naturals specializes in organic products for all curly and kinky hair types.

For the pre-poo treatment in this tutorial, I am using Mahogany Naturals Extraordinary Conditioning Hair Detox. It is designed to soften and condition hair with lots of natural, raw ingredients that are essential for hair health and manageability. What I liked most about this treatment is how soft it made the hair and the added elasticity from that softness. It retails for £40 or about $65 and is available on Mahogany Naturals’ website.

Mix your own pre-poo treatment. If you prefer to make your own, try mixing some unrefined coconut oil with a couple other oils of your choice, such as argan oil, jojoba or extra virgin olive oil. Then, add in some hemp conditioner or hair cholesterol.

  1. what did you use to dye her hair?

    • I honestly don’t recall the exact color, but I know I used 30 volume and a color from Ion’s blonde range of colors.

Can you recommend a good heat shield other than the Agadir?

    • There are lots of heat protectants out there…Creme of Nature Perfect 7, Proclaim heat protection spray, Ion heat protection spray, Mizani Thermastrength, Mixed Chicks straightening serum, IC Hair polisher/heat protector.

  3. Mo,

I noticed that you didn’t blow dry her hair like all the other straightening videos, was that preference of your client?

  4. I wish that more stylist would take the time that you do to protect the hair from pulling and breakage during manipulating. I have yet to find a stylist that is as careful as you are. You are awesome.

  5. Do you have a salon? Where is it located?

  6. Just come across you on utube. Tell me what is 4c natural hair notice you have different numbers for hair types. My hair is natural when it’s just washed it seems really thick but once blow dried and I use the straighteners on my hair it is then very fine and lacks body.
