Mo’s Favorites: Shampoos

Hydrating and gentle cleansing shampoos.

What you use to cleanse your hair is the foundation for the rest of your hair care regimen. It sets the stage for the other products that will follow and should add moisture, gently clean your scalp and strands and prepare the hair for softening through deep conditioning.

Here are some of my favorite shampoos and why I love them:

Trader Joe’s Nourish Spa Shampoo just like the conditioner, this shampoo packs a lot of essential oils and nutrients into a big bottle for a little price! What I love most about this shampoo is the squeaky clean, yet moisturized feeling it gives (I can literally hear the squeak when I rinse my hair). It is rare that these two traits exist in one shampoo. Usually if a shampoo is “squeaky” cleaning, it leaves the hair dry. But this one is just the opposite. It also has a silky smooth texture and wonderful, refreshing smell. I don’t know how Joe does it, but I’m sure glad he does! This one is available at Trader Joe’s for just $2.99.

Lustrasilk Curl Enhancing Shampoo is infused with shea butter, and essential oils like argan, macadamia and coconut making it an incredibly moisturizing cleanser. What I love most about this product is the curl defining and restorative properties. If you feel your curls are limp at times, especially if you live in a humid climate, this shampoo can give you a little boost to start your wash process off right! This particular item in the Lustrasilk family can be hard to find, but online retailers like Amazon and Best Curls have it available for around $7.

Doris New York Reconstructor Shampoo gently removes product build-up with powerful antioxidants suitable for all hair types (antioxidants protect hair from free radicals in the environment). What I love about this one is the moisturizing clean feel without the use of sulfates. It also detangles as you massage it into the hair. If you have issues with dry scalp, or often feel like it is difficult to cleanse without causing drying, give this shampoo a lather and prepare for some noticeable differences! You can pick this one up for $20 from Doris New York’s site.

Scruples White Tea Restorative Shampoo is a sulfate-free and formulated to protect hair color. What I love most about this shampoo is the infusion of white tea, which has more antioxidants than green or black tea, making for stronger, healthier hair. This shampoo is moisturizing and in my opinion helps my straight styles last longer. I use this one anytime I plan to roller-set or flat iron my hair along with the Restorative Conditioner. You can get this shampoo online from retailers like Walgreen’s or Sleek Hair for around $20.

Yes to Carrots Nourishing Shampoo cleanses, nourishes and moisturizes your hair and scalp, while revitalizing and protecting it. What I love most about this shampoo is that it contains organic carrots (great for protection from free radicals) and sweet almond oil (which is amazing for soft skin and hair). This product has lots of other wonderful ingredients like jojoba oil, olive oil, melon and orange extract making it super moisturizing. This one has a very luxurious texture that reminds you of the softness of baby cleansing products. You can get this shampoo at your local Target for around $8 or get the duo (shampoo and matching conditioner) from Yes to Carrots’ website.
