Product Line Isolation with Mixed Chicks

Hair Care Tip, Product Review and How-To

I believe, at heart, all of us are some level of “product junky.” Some of us are far more addicted to hoarding products than others (you know who you are, lol). These junkies are easy to spot because they can tell you something about almost any product line because they’ve literally tried something from them all! However, if you are frustrated by the huge stash of products you are hiding in cabinets and closets because of trial and error in selection, you may consider isolating your regimen to one brand or product line at a time to truly gauge effectiveness.

You surely have a favorite conditioner or leave-in treatment, or perhaps it’s a styling pudding or moisturizing butter that you love dearly, but you have yet to explore the other products by that same brand or line. Sometimes we get so caught up in thinking we need products from lots of brands to achieve desired results that we forego the ease of selecting multiple products from the same brand we love.

While there is nothing wrong with mixing products across brands (and I do it all the time), using products from the same one can be beneficial to you for several reasons:

  1. Manufacturers of the product formulate each item in a line to work together. They have infused them with complementary ingredients that are designed to safely and appropriately interact with each other.
  2. You can reduce the amount of money spent on trying multiple types of setting and finishing products across brands by trying the ones available in one product line.
  3. By allowing products that are formulated to work together interact, you may experience better results and increased ease of styling. Sometimes certain products don’t “play well” together and cause sticky, tacky messes. You reduce the likelihood of this happening when you use products formulated to be used together.
  4. You may also see positive changes in the behavior and overall health of your hair over time.

To demonstrate this product line isolation theory, I used one of my favorite brands, Mixed Chicks, for my wash-n-go method.

To begin, I washed my hair, two times in warm water, with the sulfate free shampoo. It is safe for color-treated hair, it will not strip your hair’s natural oils, and best of all, it is sulfate-free. And unlike many sulfate free shampoos, this one has a lather you can see and feel! Although lather isn’t necessary to cleanse the hair, it’s comforting to our senses.

After rinsing thoroughly, I could already see a great amount of definition in my curl pattern. Next, I applied the detangling deep conditioner. This product is designed to nourish, detangle, and restore hair by penetrating the cuticle and going into the hair shaft to reconstruct damaged areas. A key ingredient in this conditioner is safflower seed oil, which is great for protecting and hydrating the hair. I used a wide tooth shower comb to distribute the conditioner from roots to ends and covered with a plastic cap for 30 minutes.

Next, I rinsed my hair with cool water, to prevent frizz and lock-in moisture. To prep my hair for diffusing, I applied Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner. I completely covered and saturated my hair with the leave-in, detangled with a shower comb and scrunched my curls to clump hair together. I let my hair set for about 45 minutes, untouched. Allowing product to “set” makes for less frizz during initial styling and over the subsequent days.

I have been using this leave-in for quite a while now and I find it essential to my wash-n-go method. It keeps my wavy curls moisturized and defined, and it has ingredients that act as heat protectants and styling aids.

Before starting diffusing, I applied the gloss and shining hair silk throughout my hair in small amounts. This formula is safe for color-treated hair and helps hair color look more vibrant. It also makes hair feel soft to the touch, adds shine without weighing hair down and has a very light, pleasant smell.

I diffused my hair on low speed, high heat while leaning forward and to each side until dry. This allowed my hair to set the opposite direction of my natural laying pattern, adding lift and volume. As I diffused, I noticed my hair was very light, fluffy and felt moisturized to the touch. I also noticed how all of the Mixed Chicks products seamlessly worked together to prevent frizz, define my curls and make my hair shiny and healthy.
